MINISTER'S MESSAGE |
| |
| About once a quarter
when I’m in Washington for the Navy, I travel
up to Bethesda to the hospital to visit wounded
warriors. It seems like the least I can do and
the young Marines, sailors and soldiers I meet
there are encouraged when an admiral drops by
to pray with them.
On July 22nd, I visited six wounded Marines from
the war in Afghanistan. One twenty-year-old corporal,
from Tennessee, showed me the injury from a land
mine to the back of his foot. With his leg up
I noticed a surgical scar on his thigh. He told
me more shrapnel had entered there. Then he turned
and pulled down his boxers to show me the large
scar on his back side, also shrapnel from the
mine. His mother, the other chaplain with us,
the Marine and I all had a good laugh. The first
time a corporal had bared his hind quarters to
an admiral!
On my previous visit I visited one young National
Guard soldier from Buffalo. His wounds were much
more extensive, caused by an IED that hit his
humvee in Iraq. Due to traumatic brain injury,
he had not talked yet but the doctors thought
he followed conversation. In the visit, I was
overwhelmed by the level of this young man’s
sacrifice and acutely aware of how little I could
do. I was convinced, however, he followed our
conversation because when I talked about his daughter
who had been born while he was overseas, I noticed
tears in his eyes. I closed the visit with prayer
and then his mother and I and the other chaplain
prayed the Lord’s Prayer with him. During
the prayer I opened my eyes and looked down at
him. His lips were moving and he was trying to
say the Lord’s Prayer with us.
Ministry is not always this intense. But there
are moments when I find myself at a bedside helping
someone like that young man make contact with
God because he cannot do it himself. I thank you
for your willingness as a congregation to extend
your ministry by allowing me to go far a field
from Glen Ridge, to take the love of God to such
fellows as those I meet in Bethesda. It is an
honor to pray with such young heroes. I want you
to know I am there also representing you and our
Lord. ~J.D. Stinson

CALENDAR
OF PRAYER |
| |
| Each year the UCC
prints a calendar of prayer for members to use
in their devotional life. Each day a mission
is mentioned and described to be included in
the prayer lives of members and congregations.
On August 23rd this year, Cindy Reynolds’
Bread for the Journey is highlighted! This is
a monthly gathering of women from Integrity
House at our church. Cindy leads the women in
conversation, Bible Study and prayer. Usually
there is also lunch provided by members of the
congregation.
